THE ALMANAC

One page of wisdom
per pillar.

The core lesson, distilled. Read one per day for eight days. Then re-read.

◆ BODY · 01

Your body is running the show.

Body is not one pillar of eight — it is the substrate the other seven run on. Every other pillar borrows compute from it.

Poor sleep costs you 20 points across Mind, Bonds, and Work by 3pm. Chronic under-movement quietly steals 30 more. Dehydration alone can drop your executive-function score by 12%.

The body is not there to look good. It is there to run everything else.

Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live.— JIM ROHN

If you had to fix one thing this quarter, fix sleep. The rest cascades.

◆ MIND · 02

Attention is the currency of a life.

Where you point attention is where your life goes. Not what you say. Not what you feel. Where the attention actually lands.

Most people give attention to what is loudest. The refined life is one where attention is given to what matters. Which means most of the work of Mind is subtraction. Delete apps. Close tabs. Kill notifications. Say no more.

The direct use of physical force is so poor a solution... that it is commonly employed only by small children and great nations.— DAVID FRIEDMAN

Substitute "attention" for "force." The metaphor holds.

◆ MONEY · 03

Freedom is the goal. Wealth is the tool.

Most people chase wealth because they think it's the point. It isn't. The point is freedom — the ability to say no, the ability to walk away, the ability to say yes to what you actually want.

You reach freedom faster by lowering the number you need than by raising the number you have. Every dollar spent on a status good is a dollar farther from freedom.

The highest form of wealth is the ability to wake up every morning and say, "I can do whatever I want today."— MORGAN HOUSEL

Track expenses monthly. Automate savings. That's most of the game.

◆ WORK · 04

The work you do while nobody is watching.

Meaningful work is 90% earned in the boring hours nobody sees.

Every craft — every one — is built by doing the un-glamorous rep, alone, again. The world sees the highlight and thinks it was luck. It was reps.

Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration. The rest of us just get up and go to work.— STEPHEN KING

What's the rep you're avoiding this week?

◆ BONDS · 05

Relationships are the whole game.

The Harvard Study of Adult Development followed 700 people for 85 years. It's the longest study of human flourishing ever conducted. Its finding, distilled to one line:

The people who fared the best were the people who leaned into relationships — with family, with friends, with community.— ROBERT WALDINGER

Not the richest. Not the most famous. Not the most productive. The most connected.

Text 3 people you love this week. It's the highest-return investment there is.

◆ SPIRIT · 06

You cannot skip the inner work forever.

Modern life outsources the inner work — to work, to sex, to shopping, to substances, to phones. It works for a while. It always breaks.

Spirit isn't religion (though it can be). It's the practice of coming home to yourself before the world hands you a bill for not doing so.

5 minutes of morning silence for 30 days will rearrange more of your life than a year of therapy for some people. Try it.

He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.— FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE
◆ PLAY · 07

Play is not the reward. Play is the fuel.

We're taught that we earn play through work. It's backwards. Play is what makes real work possible.

Adults who lose play lose creativity, lose flexibility, lose the ability to surprise themselves. Play is the training ground of curiosity — the same curiosity that solves your hardest problems at work.

The opposite of play is not work — it is depression.— STUART BROWN

Block 2 hours this weekend for something completely unproductive. Watch what breaks loose.

◆ LEGACY · 08

Play the long game, and only the long game.

Legacy is not what people remember about you after you die. It is the effect you have on the people who never meet you — the mentee-of-your-mentee, the child of your friend, the reader of your work in 40 years.

You don't have to build a pyramid. You just have to point one person up the ladder. Then another. That is the whole thing.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.— CHINESE PROVERB
